Church Fathers are fascinating characters, their thoughts and lives have a great impact over our actual theology. Christopher A. Hall is associate editor of IVP’s Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture series. In this book Christopher offers a very good to Church Father’s biblical interpretation.
The book is divided into eight chapters. In chapters 1, 2 and 3 Hall helps us see why we need to be interested in the Church Fathers. It helps us to see that for a long time, Protestantism has left ignored those who preceded us. But this book is an opportunity to change that attitude.
In chapters 4 and 5, the author introduces us to eight Fathers of the Church. Four East Doctors and Four West Doctors. (Personally, these chapters are the most enjoyable.) These eight doctors selected by Hall help us to know the Church Fathers perspective on the Scriptures and how it was interpreted by them.
In the last three chapters, Hall presents an overviewabout the development of the interpretation of the Scriptures by two important schools: Alexandria and Antioch. Chapters very necessary to understand the patristic thought and interpretation.
Finally, I must say, this book is a good introduction for the seminary student, as any Christian interested in the history of the Church. Let's know our history.
